Big Wheel
Theatre Company is committed to working for our local community
here in Clerkenwell. Recent
projects include:
Spa Fields
Parks regeneration
Spa Fields
is one of the few substantial green spaces in Clerkenwell. Situated
directly behind our building, the park has for a long time been
a no-go area, but has recently been completely re-designed.
It now connects directly to Exmouth Market via an alley beside
our venue.
We have conducted two projects for the London Borough of Islington,
in association with the designers Park-Life, to involve young
people in the re-design of Spa Fields park, and to give them
a sense of ownership.
London Metropolitan Archive
Our neighbours, the London Metropolitan Archives (LMA) has
been working with Big Wheel and local schools on a variety of
projects relating to Local History and Citizenship. The LMA
and Big Wheel have jointly developed a series of workshops to
introduce pupils to historical documents held at the LMA. Documents
have included an 18th century court record, photographs of immigrants
arriving from the Carribean on the Empire Windrush, and a map
of World War Two bomb damage in Clerkenwell. At the moment
we are working with the LMA, and Clerkenwell Parochial School
to develop a document-based project to mark the Abolition of
Slavery. For more information, go to the History and
Citizenship section of
our UK
Schools programme
The Exmouth Market Traders Association
Big Wheel is a member of EMTA, and helps out with events in
Exmouth Market. In particular, Shez of Big Wheel has MC'd the
Exmouth Market Festival two years running, with great success.

Clerkenwell New Writers
Two years ago, Big Wheel organised a Local New Writing festival
to mark the conversion of the space downstairs into a theatre
venue. It was a huge success, and led to the establishment of
a group of writers who meet regularly at Big Wheel. We provide
free meeting and rehearsal space, and advice on funding and
publicity.
New Writing Sundays
Every first Sunday in the month at 4.00 pm, a group of professional
actors perform rehearsed readings of new plays in the Clerkenwell
Theatre. We provide advice, lighting equipment, and free rehearsal
space.
